Urmila Matondkar (born on February 4, 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Urmila Matondkar is one of the most versatile actresses in Bollywood , her father was a lecturer. Besides acting and dancing the actress also has a passion for painting and singing.

Although Urmila Matondkar has arguably the loveliest actresses in Bollywood, she cut her hair short several times for many films, and is one of the few actresses who dont hesitate to snip off their tresses if the role demands it. She is also known to be very fond of short hair.

Urmila Matondkar entered Bollywood as a child artist, with her first movie being ‘Kalyug’ (1980), which was followed by ‘Zakol’. However, it was her third movie ‘Masoom’ (1983) that made the audience sit back and take notice. Subsequently, she was seen in ‘Sur Sangam’ (1985), along with ‘Dacait’ and ‘Zindagi’ (1987).

Urmila made her debut as a leading star in a Malayalam-language film ‘Chanakyan’ (1989), in which she starred opposite Kamal Hassan. It was ‘Narasimha’ (1991) that served as her leading role debut in Hindi movies.

Her first big hit was the 1995 Rangeela, in which she played a star-struck dancer. She was nominated for a Filmfare Best Actress Award for her work in Rangeela. Urmila Matondkar did the fantasy Chamatkar with the then-debutant Shahrukh Khan and Shreemaan Aashique (1993), a comedy on male chauvinism opposite Anupam Kher and Rishi Kapoor and a crime movie Drohi (1992), But no matter what films she did, while her fellow actresses Manisha Koirala and Raveena Tandon reached the peak of their popularity with blockbuster after blockbuster, success seemed to elude her.

Asha Bhosle sang the maximum number of songs in the 90′s and the 2000′s, for Urmila Matondkar. Urmila Matondkar ‘s talent for singing came to the fore recently when she sung a song with Asha Bhosle for the latter’s album ‘Asha And Friends’.

Urmila is an outstanding dancer and has been a featured performer in many Bollywood “item numbers”, in which a star gives a cameo performance in a song-and-dance number.

Perhaps her best-known item number is the Chamma Chamma sequence from the 1998 China Gate. A brief Westernized version of Chamma Chamma appeared in Baz Luhrman’s 2001 film musical, Moulin Rouge — minus Urmila.

Other hit numbers include the opening song of Company,Aaiye Aajaye from the hit film Lajja. She has recently been signed to perform the item song in the Remake of Sholay that was earlier performed by the legendary Helen.
