Sumalatha is an old Malayalam film actress who now lives as an evergreen heroine.  Sumalatha, born on 27 August, 1963 is a South Indian actress who acted in films from the mid 80’s to 90’s.

Sumalatha began acting at age 15, after winning an Andhra Pradesh beauty contest. She speaks six different languages. Her close friend is actress Sukanya Maniratnam. Sumalatha a very natural actress acted in more than 200 films in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi movies. She has acted in almost all types of roles from character to high action movies.

Sumalatha has appeared in many Tamil and Telugu films early in her career. She was Rajinikanth’s second heroine besides Rati Agnihotri in films like Murattu Kaalai and Kazhugu. Most of her Telugu films are with Chiranjeev in Swayamkrushi, Gangleader, Veta, Raakshasudu, Kaidhi, Chattam tho Poratam, Agnigundam and Sri Manjunatha.

Sumalatha’s first film “DISAI MARIYA PARAVAIGAL”, produced by Mr.P.S. Veerappa and directed by a new director Jagadheeshan was about a Brahmin girl,who due to circumstances becomes a nun . It was a very unconventional theme and was a successful film and fetched her the “BEST NEW FACE AWARD”.

Sumalatha has very long hair, which was one of her unique features. On their way to Vizag for the shoot of a Telugu movie ‘Janaki Ramudu’, one of the heroines Sukanya, who had a penchant for hairdressing her co-star, was casually combing Sumalatha’s hair in the train. When Kodandarami Reddy, the Director of the movie happened to see this scene, he asked his cameraman Ashok Reddy to immediately film that scene and added it to the movie as a sentimental scene.

Sumalatha has acted in many Telugu films. She received the best actress Nandi Award for her role in Sruthilayalu in 1987. She co-starred with Rajendra Prasad (actor) in Jayammu Nishchayammu Raa and Donga Kollu. Her last movie in Telugu is Boss (2006), she played Sreya’s mother role in that movie

She is married to actor and Karnataka politician Ambareesh with whom she has acted in couple of movies like ‘Antha’, ‘Aahuti’, ‘Avatara Purusha’, Kallarali Hoovagi which went on to win a National Award. They supposedly met on the sets of a movie and she was attracted to Ambareesh’s bold and bindas personality.

Sumalatha is now hosting a programme in Zee Telugu called ‘Batuku Zatka Bandi’ where she tries to solve the family problems of common people and tries to make patch up them with her suggestions.
