Sridevi is one of the few true superstars of Indian popular cinema. Taking her name from Devi Sri, incarnation of Laksmi the goddess of fortune and prosperity .Sridevi was born as Shree Amma Yanger to Ayyapan and Rajeswari on 13th August, 1963 in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. Her father was a lawyer. She has a sister and two step brothers.

Sridevi started her career as a child actor in the 1967 Tamil movie Kandhan Karunai playing the role of young Lord Muruga and acted in many Tamil and Telugu movies from then on. Thunaivan was her first movie but released next to Kandhan Karunai.  During her early teens, she acted in a number of Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam movies as a lead actress.

Throughout her film career, from a childhood artist she performed in over 200 movies.

As an adult, she was often paired with Kamal Hassan (they did 23 movies together). She was also frequently paired with Jeetendra (19 movies).

In 1983, she starred in her first Hindi film, Solva Saawan. This movie failed at the box office; however, her second Hindi movie, Himmatwala, was a success. Throughout the 1980s, she starred in a number of very successful movies, among them Nagina, Mr. India, Chandni, and Chaalbaaz, which won her a Filmfare Award.

Sridevi got her first big break as heroine in K. Balachander’s Parallel Cinema Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite rising stars, Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan.

Sridevi was the undisputed number one female actress in ‘the south’ (Tamil & Telugu cinema) before she made in 1982 the crossover as a top billing heroine in Bollywood.

During the 80s Sridevi’s electric dance numbers and star presence were only rivaled by Hema Malini, Rekha, then towards the end of the decade by the then rising Madhuri Dixit. Sridevi holds a special place in the hearts and minds of 100s of millions of movie fans. With radiant and earnest aplomb Sridevi carried off the high kitsch fashion trends of Bollywood in the 80s and early 90s better than any other actress. Sridevi was one of the major facets that defined the Bollywood style and look of the 1980s.

After a six-year hiatus, Sridevi returned to the small screen, briefly, in the Sahara sitcom Malini Iyer (2004-2005). She also appeared on Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai for Karishma Kapoor (2004) and as a judge in the TV show Kaboom (2005).

Sridevi married film producer Boney Kapoor on June 2, 1996. Mumbai. At that time Boney and Mona had been married for several years and had two children Arjun and Anshula. Later both got divorced. Boney Kapoor and Sridevi have two daughters: Jhanvi and Khushi. Through her husband she is related to the large Surinder Kapoor film clan. Actor Anil Kapoor, her co-star in a number film, is her brother-in-law.

Childlike, spontaneous, comic, sensuous, beautiful…adjectives like these aren’t enough to describe the lady who reigned at the top for ten years in Bollywood.
