Sonali Bendre has an arresting face – on screen and even more so off it. A complete professional, the Bendre girl never seemed to make it big in Bollywood. She has everything – the looks, the persona and the acting talent. Still, the Bendre girl managed to make the right choices within the framework of what was offered to her in Bollywood. Marriage and a sabbatical later, she makes an appearance in theater. A chat with the Humma, Hummagirl.

Bendre is grateful to her husband Goldie for being so supportive and giving her the space she craves for. He was present along with his parents during the first show as were Bendre’s parents. Marriage, she says, suits her very well since she had known Goldie for a long time before marrying him and she is blessed with understanding in-laws as well. Lucky girl! She says that marriage will not stop her accepting good film offers that come her way. Her last project was the Marathi film Anahat. She still does one Telugu film a year and says that she is welcomed with open arms there. As for dance shows, she says that she doesn’t enjoy them. The money doesn’t matter to her. She simply will not do anything that makes her uncomfortable. Period.

After captivating a select audience on screen, Sonali Bendra made her debut stage appearance in the play Aapki Soniya, a sequel to the original Tumhari Amrita by Javed Siddiqui. Bendre says the choice was anything by premeditated. Rather, the entire team involved in the play voted unanimously for her to play the lead! Bendre had not made any effort to experiment with theatre but when this role literally fell into her lap, she decided to give it a try thought she did have her reservations and was apprehensive initially. What clinched it was the powerful script. To perform before a live audience was very intimidating for the lass who was used to retakes and touch-ups. Still, the team was so supportive that she finally overcame her initial fears. And so Bendre played Sonia, a spirited and strong woman. The rehearsals demanded a lot out of her, she admits, since she was not a trained theater actor. However, the Bendre girl worked hard (as she always does) in perfecting her diction and the result has been positive.

That’s Somali for you. Crystal clear about what she wants and confidant that she will continue to get choice offers which will provide her with meaty roles. Hopefully, Bollywood will sit up and notice her more after her stage debut.
