Roja Selvamani magnanimously known as Roja is a South Indian actress and politician. Roja was born in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. She learnt Kuchipudi, a dance form, for a few years. She has a brother Kumaraswamy Reddy.

Roja entered the cinema industry from Telugu films. Her first movie was Prema thapassu with acting legend Rajendra prasad where the complete movie was shooted in Tirupati itself. She was first introduced in the Tamil film by director R.K. Selvamani in his film Chembaruthi paired with actor Prashanth. The movie was a hit and paved the way for her in the Tamil cinema industry. She became popular with her songs such as Veloor Maman in the film Makkal Aatchi with Mammootty and Mastana Mastana in Rasaiyya with Prabhu Deva. She became popular acting in films with actors such as Rajnikanth in Veera, and Arjun Sarja in Ayudha Poojai.

Roja’s career breakthrough was in the film Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen, directed by Vikraman. She performed very well in this film in a character role Roja appeared in supporting roles in Arasu (2001) and in Parijaatham (2006).

She has even acted for a solo song performance in a few movies without reservations. She has been awarded for her performances by magazines and organisations for roles in films in the Tamil language and the Telugu language.

Roja is a very friendly co-star and a hobby costume designer cum hairstylist. Roja and Meena resembled each other when younger, and Meena acted as Roja’s younger sister in several movies. Roja had a penchant for hairdressing and it was evidently seen as whenever she is in the sets, she’s seen hairdressing her co-heroines like Devayani, Kushboo, Ranjitha, Mumtaz to name a few.

According to Ramya Krishnan, her friend and co-star, Roja is one of the few artists who can do they make-up themselves.

Actress Meena, in an interview in the Vijay TV program, “Coffee with Anu”, admired Roja for her sisterly affection and wanted to act as her younger sister in a movie or TV serial, as they look alike. Her 100th movie was Pottu Amman.

Roja is married to the director R. K. Selvamani, the director of her first movie.
