Music Director SP Balasubramaniam Profile

SP Balasubramaniam is a multilingual Indian playback singer, actor, music director, voice actor and a film producer.

Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam alias SP Balasubramaniam born 4 June 1946 at Konaattaampettai Andhra Pradesh.

SP Balasubramaniam is a veteran singer, who has been associated with the Indian film industry for the past thirty years. Fondly called SPB, has sung over 39,000 songs, in five different languages including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam. SP Balasubramaniam name also features in Guinness Book of World Records, for singing the most number of song recordings within a very short period.

SP Balasubramaniam belongs to an orthodox Telugu Brahmin family, pursued an AMIE course form JNTU College of Engineering, while he was studying, SP Balasubramaniam participated in a number of singing competitions and won several awards.

In 1964, Music director SP Kodandapani noticed Balasubramaniam performing at a singing competition, organized by Madras-based Telugu Cultural Organization and was very much impressed by SPB’s performance and decided to introduce him as a singer in the Telugu film ‘Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna’ (1967), for which he had composed the songs.

Other music directors across the South Indian film industry were equally impressed by the new voice of SP Balasubramaniam. Since then SP Balasubramaniam was offered chances to sing in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam films.

SP Balasubramaniam though was very young, started singing for many different language films. As he became very busy, at times he used to sing even 17 songs in 12 hours at the recording theatre. At one stage Balasubramaniam started acting in the Telugu film “Pellante Noorella Panta”, released in 1969. Gradually the frequency of his acting work increased in a fast pace and he did roles in Tamil and Telugu films.

At one stage, SP Balasubramaniam  also stepped into the profession music direction when Dasari Narayana Rao gave him a break as composer in `Kanya-Kumari’ and thus has so far composed music for more than 50 films! He who was in the beginning doing playback singing for Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films, latter expanded this to Hindi, Bengali, Oriya, Thulu too!

SP Balasubramaniam has accompanied Latha Mangeshkar in her live shows in the US and UK, He had the rare distinction of meeting the US President Bill Clinton along with Lathaji at the White House.

SP Balasubramaniam has built `Kodandapani Audio Laboratories’ in his mentor’s name in Chennai. It is one of the most modern sound recording theatres in the country, Balu calls it his dream temple.
