Jayalalitha was the first Woman Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. But she was a popular film star in Tamil cinema before her entry into politics.

Jayalalithaa Jayaram born 24 February 1948, the former Chief Minister and current leader of the opposition of the Government of Tamil Nadu, India. She was born Komalavalli in Melukote in Pandavapur taluk of Mandya district, Karnataka,[2] in a Tamil Iyengar family, native of Srirangam, Trichy.

Jayalalitha is a charismatic leader in Tamil Nadu politics.

She is popularly called Amma (mother) and Puratchi Thalaivi (Revolutionary Leader) by her followers.

Jayalalitha was educated at the Bishop Cotton Girls High School in Bangalore and later at the Presentation Convent Church Park in Chennai. On completion of Matriculation in 1964, she won a scholarship from Government of India for higher studies but did not accept it as she took up a career in films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, English and Malayalam.

She was trained in classical dance (Bharata Natyam) and Carnatic Music from the age of 4 onwards. She is proficient in other dance-forms such as Mohini Attam, Kathak, Manipuri. She has given hundreds of performances in Bharatha Natyam all over India and has sung several songs herself in her films. She is proficient in English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and can understand Malayalam also.

Jayalalitha acted as a vampish lead in G. Krishna’s James Bond-type hit Goodachari 116 she was noticed by everyone.

Her Mother Celine was influential person in her life who was a school head mistress.
Her mother supported Jayalalitha for her career in films.

Jayalalitha says “One-third of my life was dominated by my mother, the other part — a major one — was dominated by MGR. Two-third of my life is thus over. One third remains and this part of my life remains for myself but there are some responsibilities and duties to be fulfilled”.

Jayalalitha would have been a Lawyer If she would not enter into film industry.
