Amala Akkineni is a famous yesteryear South Indian film actress, who has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films.

Amala was born in West Bengal to an Irish Mother and Bengali Father. She has an elder brother and sister. She is married to the south Indian actor Nagarjuna. She is also one of the prominent animal rights activists of India. She was educated in Kalakshetra, Madras in classical Dance.

Amala made her debut in a Tamil film titled Mythili Yennai Kadali directed by T Rajendar, which was a big box office hit. She has also starred in many Tollywood Telugu movies and few Bollywood movies, however her career has been concentrated in the South Indian cinema. Apart from Tamil and Telugu she also acted in few Malayalam and Kannada films.

Winning overnight fame in a Tamil film by famous director T Rajendar, she charmed cinegoers in a flurry of fifty films. She acted in a number of Tamil and Telugu movies. Her performance in Pushpak Agninakshtram (Gharshana) are unforgettable. She acted with Telugu superstar Nagarjuna Akkineni in hits like Nirnayam and Shiva.

The movie Shiva was a mega blockbuster and brought her wide fame and recognition and got married to actor Akkineni Nagarjuna, who was her co-star in Ram Gopal Verma’s Shiva (film) and became a stepmother to his 6-year-old son(at that time) named Naga Chaitanya, from her husband’s first marriage.
Her son Akhil (born in 1994) acted in a movie ‘Sisindri’(1995), an unacknowledged copy of the Hollywood film Baby’s Day Out, as the baby who is now studying in Australia a high school that provides premium cricket training.

She acted with most of the Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu iconic actors like Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, Prabhu, Mohan in Tamil, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi in Malayalam and Chiranjeevi in Telugu among several others. She worked with veteran directors like Bharathiraja, Maniratnam, Ram Gopal Verma.

After marriage Amala quitted films and both Amala and her husband started ‘Blue Cross of Hyderabad’. Amala is famous as the founder of ‘Blue Cross of Hyderabad’ a non-government organization (NGO) in Hyderabad, India, which works towards the welfare of animals and preservation of animal rights. She is a practicing Vegetarian and does not touch alcohol. She also teaches Yoga for women, and actively promotes communal harmony.
